TE buffer, at 1X concentration, is a commonly used solution, particularly in molecular biology and biochemistry. TE stands for Tris-EDTA, as it contains Tris (tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid).
TE buffer provides a stable environment for DNA and RNA by protecting them from degradation. Tris acts as a buffering agent, maintaining a stable pH, while EDTA chelates divalent metal ions, which are cofactors for nucleases, thus inhibiting their activity and protecting nucleic acids from enzymatic degradation.
TE buffer is commonly used in various molecular biology techniques, such as DNA and RNA extraction, storage of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA gel electrophoresis, and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assays.
It is also used in DNA and RNA quantification assays, such as spectrophotometry and fluorometry.
